Configuration

After loading SqueekySynth for the first time, it is recommended that you configure it for best performance under your system before using it.

Click the "Setup" tab near the top right corner of the application. This will display the setup page, as illustrated in the picture below:

These are the default settings; if you need to restore them at any time, refer to this picture.

It is recommended that you adjust "Sample Rate" to ensure it is correct for your system (see description below); the other settings are acceptable as their defaults. However, you may need to adjust the polyphony (on the "Main" page) before good performance can be achieved. This is explained in more detail later in the manual.

The controls are as follows:

Output Device

Selects where the audio will be routed. In the current version, this feature is not yet supported, so the audio is always routed to the Media Kit Mixer, and thus to the destination selected in the Media Preferences panel.

Sample Rate

Selects the sample rate that will be used for the synthesizer. Although lower settings take less CPU time, SqueekySynth will achieve its highest quality and lowest latency when this is set to the same sample rate as your sound card (which can be determined by opening the BeOS Media Preferences panel, and inspecting the label below "Master Gain" in the Audio Mixer section), as depicted below:

Timing Accuracy

The default setting of "High (1ms)" is recommended. If you are experiencing excessive CPU use, or the audio is crackling, try lowering this setting, although this will increase latency and decrease MIDI timing accuracy.

Priority

Controls the priority given to SqueekySynth above other applications on your system. The default setting of "Medium" is a good choice. If you are finding your system becomes too unresponsive during heavy playback, try reducing this to "Low", although be aware that the audio may stutter more often on this setting. If you require guaranteed stutter-free audio (e.g., live performance, final recording, etc.), select "High", although be aware that your system may become extremely unresponsive during heavy playback on this setting.

Reduce Polyphony if CPU Overloaded

If you are using the "High" priority setting, this option is STRONGLY RECOMMENDED, hence why it is the default. Only disable this if you have a good reason to do so. Since the "High" priority setting gives priority to SqueekySynth over everything else on your system, you can get trapped in a situation where too many notes are playing on SqueekySynth for your CPU to handle, and there isn't enough CPU time left to move the mouse to stop the playback. If this option is enabled, upon detecting this catastrophic condition, the polyphony of the synthesizer will be periodically reduced until the system becomes responsive again.

Two MIDI Ports

When selected, SqueekySynth will publish two MIDI ports to the operating system. This is essentially equivalent to having two copies of SqueekySynth running, each totally independent except sharing the effects processors, Soundfonts, and global settings. Use this option if you are doing dense arrangements (e.g., orchestral music) and need more than 16 MIDI channels. It is disabled by default to avoid confusion and unnecessary clutter of MIDI port lists.

PLEASE NOTE
All settings on the "Setup" page require SqueekySynth to be restarted before the changes take effect. All settings on other pages take effect in real-time.
